Dancing Robotic Snake
Designing and building this snake was my final year Mechanical Engineering project at Imperial College London. The project was split into two halves: mechanical design, for which I was responsible, and control, for which a fellow student was in charge. The two halves of the project were developed under a common specification.
The mechanical development involved some acute challenges, not least the shoe-string budget of £150, but also minimising weight, and introducing a moment-compensation system using a fixed suspended mass beneath the snake. This compensation system enabled the use of much smaller and cheaper motors to achieve the same functionality for much lower cost.
The snake particularly loved to dance to Brick House by the Commodores.
